How people celebrate Christmas in 2019.

23 representative Christmas traditions and English vocabulary related to Christmas
What do you think of first when you say “Christmas”?

Eye? Christmas tree? Hot chocolate?

On the other hand, some of you may remember the sultry Christmas you spend at the beach with your friends.

Depending on which English-speaking country you live in, the above two images may actually depict a very realistic Christmas.

For example, December in the northern hemisphere, such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, is cold,

Christmas in the southern hemisphere like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa is a hot summer holiday.

As there are so many English speaking countries around the globe, the Christmas tradition is unique in every country. But in this post, we'll talk about Christmas traditions that are common in the US and Canada.

Importance of Christmas Traditions
Christmas is one of the most important holidays in English speaking countries. Perhaps the biggest holiday in America is Christmas or Thanksgiving, but Christmas is a big difference from Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a secular holiday that has nothing to do with religion. I celebrate this day mainly by gathering with my family and eating delicious food. For many people, however, Christmas is a religious day rooted in faith and religious traditions.

Christmas is basically a day to celebrate Jesus' birth on December 25th, but at the same time there are also religion-independent customs, such as Santa Claus, writing Christmas cards and giving gifts.

Whether it is religious or non-religious, many Christmas traditions vary from place to place and from house to house. This is because tradition is passed down from generation to generation.

Today we're going to organize some of the most common Christmas traditions we've done today, starting with the family and friends category, and then we'll look at the traditions related to food and faith in Christian Christmas. Will recognize.

Family and friends
English-Christmas-Traditional

Christmas is a holiday where people value the fun of talking and eating together. I usually spend time with friends and family to celebrate this day.

1.Family get-together celebrate Christmas in 2019.
Family get-togethers celebrate Christmas in 2019.Most families try to get together to spend Christmas Eve (December 24) or Christmas Day (December 25) together. This informal gathering of close people is called get-together in English nouns.

If you live far away from your family, it's hard to spend Christmas with your family, and instead you'll have a special dinner or party for Christmas with your friends (or family of friends) and replace them for family gatherings.

Each house can have a variety of Christmas cultures and customs, depending on their traditions, ethnicities and values, but this gathering with family and friends is common.

2. Gift giving & gift exchanges
Many people celebrate Christmas by giving gifts to friends, family, and colleagues, which is called a gift exchange. Let's take a moment to look at some of the words related to gifts and the types of gift exchanges.

Usually, you wrap your present with pretty wrapping paper. If you want, you can put it in a gift box or gift bag. And after exchanging it, open the gift (unwrap) and see what's inside.

Some families and workplaces offer a different type of gift exchange. Many people prefer a gift exchange called secret Santa because it's expensive to give a gift to every friend and colleague one by one. Secret Santa randomly picks someone else's name, It is to secretly prepare a gift for you.

Another gift exchange is called the white elephant. White elephants bring each one a gift that doesn't pay much, and then the first one opens the first one with everyone watching. Then the second person has the right to open a gift that the first person has opened or if he does not like it. If the second person took the first person's gift, the first person can have the second person's gift or open the next one. Pretty fun way? However, it is best to bring inexpensive gifts because competition can be fierce and the atmosphere can be cluttered.

3. Charity
The word charity refers to activities that help those who need help, such as those who have no money to buy or homeless. “Festivals” such as Thanksgiving and Christmas are also the seasons for the most charitable work of the year.

For example, some people may volunteer to cook food in homeless temporary housing, or donate gifts to poor children.

In general, these holiday seasons are perceived as helping people in need, and the phrase “keep the spirit alive all year.” Is boring, meaning that you should help others throughout the year, not just at the end of the year.

4. Office parties celebrate Christmas in 2019.
Many companies also hold holiday parties or end of the year parties with their employees in December. The reason why we call it a holiday party in English instead of a Christmas party stems from our effort not to use the name “Christmas” in order to have fun with everyone, regardless of religion.

And these year-end parties are usually characterized by their spouses or lovers.

5. Family traditions
As mentioned earlier, Christmas traditions often vary from house to house. Because they usually follow a cultural background and custom.

For example, my house has a tradition of eating fondue on Christmas Eve. And on Christmas day we exchange gifts. We also have gift exchanges like the white elephant, but what's unusual is that you have to find a gift that is related to a particular alphabet (this year was “F”). This is my home and my friends are following their own customs.

If you know any native English speakers, ask them what Christmas traditions are in their homes.

6. Family meals
When families get together for Christmas, they usually enjoy special dinners. Christmas meals are treated as a very special dinner, as many homes have high-quality plates and cutlery that are used only at Christmas or other special occasions. Although there are common foods that are eaten mainly during the holidays, this can also be different for each household.

In my home, I eat prime ribs as my main dish. We have cardamom bread, a Danish-style bread with spices called cardamom, and a crab dip made by my aunt.

7. Decorations
In the U.S., you can see that by December it is December without looking at the calendar. Wherever you go, you'll find Christmas decorations, and you can hear Carols in your ears.

The most common decoration is probably the Christmas tree. Houses celebrating Christmas have basically a tree in their home. Some people go to large tree markets, others pick trees from Christmas tree farms and buy them right away.

On the other hand, many people buy artificial trees because they do not want to mess with the house or buy a new one every year.

The ornament is often called a tree ornament, which has hooks that make it easy to hang on the tree. Some houses have great significance for this decoration. For example, if you've been on a special trip this year, buy an airplane-shaped decoration to remember that year.

Christmas trees can also be decorated with Christmas lights. On the other hand, there are many people who decorate the outside of the house with these Christmas lights, and decorate the outside and the garden with very long and big lights and other decorations of the Christmas concept.

It is also common to hang round wreaths made of pine branches on the front door.

Finally, Christmas stockings can't be missed. Have you ever heard that Santa Claus enters a chimney and keeps gifts for his children in socks? So every house has a custom to hang big, long socks next to the fireplace at Christmas. But you only give gifts to good children?

8.Christmas cards
Giving Christmas cards to family and friends is still a popular Christmas tradition. In a similar vein to writing a birthday card, the only difference is that many homes have family pictures in them. And write down what the family did a year. In December, I often get Christmas cards from friends and family.
